US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Elaine Chao, the former labor secretary and wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, as his transportation secretary.

  美国总统当选者唐纳德·特朗普选择了Elaine Chao,前任劳工部长、参议院多数党领袖Mitch McConnell的妻子担任运输部长。

“Secretary Chao’s extensive record of strong leadership and her expertise are invaluable assets in our mission to rebuild our infrastructure in a fiscally responsible manner,” Trump said in a statement on Tuesday.

Chao is set to play a key role in fulfilling Trump’s election promise of overhauling US transportation infrastructure.

She said, “The president-elect has outlined a clear vision to transform our country's infrastructure, accelerate economic growth and productivity, and create good paying jobs across the country.”

According to Trump's transition website, he plans to invest 550 billion US dollars to “build the roads, highways, bridges, tunnels, airports and railways of tomorrow.”

Former US Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao arrives at Trump Tower for meetings scheduled with President-elect Donald Trump on November 21, 2016 in New York.

Chao is the first female cabinet-level appointment by Trump. Born in Taiwan, she moved to the US with her family when she was eight years old.

  Chao是特朗普任命的第一个女内阁。 她出生在台湾,八岁时,和家人搬到美国。

She has since acquired an MBA degree from Harvard University and worked in the banking sector before entering politics in the 1980s.

The 63-year-old served as secretary of labor under President George W. Bush from 2001 through 2009, the first Asian-American woman to serve in a cabinet position.

As secretary of labor, she was the only official in Bush's cabinet to serve with him for all eight years of his time in office.

She also served as the deputy secretary of transportation under President George H.W. Bush from 1989 to 1991.

Since leaving government service, Chao has held a position as a distinguished fellow at conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation.

She has been married to McConnell since 1993.
